The Students Federation of India staged a demonstration in front of the DC office in Mangalore on January 9, Wednesday demanding a CBI probe into the Sowjanya rape and murder case. The protest was organized to also prevail upon the authorities to arrest the true culprits behind the case.
Speaking on the occasion, Nitin Kumar, District President of SFI said the policedepartment has still failed to ensure total protection to the student community.Female students have insecurity while returning home from colleges in the evening. Pointing out at the over 50 cases of sexual harassment reported from thedistrict last year, he blamed the police department for its inefficiency.
He said though it has been three months since Sowjanya was killed, all that the police could do was arrest a mentally ill man.
SFI District Secretary Razak Montepadavu urged for a fresh probe into the Sowjanya case and warned of a severe protest otherwise.
A memorandum signed by over 10,000 students was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on the occasion.
