On Sowjanya's birthday, students demand CBI probe into her death

On the birthday of Sowjanya, who was brutally raped and murdered a year ago in Beltangady, the All College Students’ Association paid condolence to her and protested by lighting candles, demanding a CBI probe into the case.
The protest was held in front of the DC office on Friday October 18.
Speaking to media persons, advocate Dinakar Shetty, president, All College Students’ Association, said, “It has been almost a year since the tragic incident took place and in order to get her justice we have organized a candlelight protest to show that we are with the students.”
Supporting the statement made by former union minister Janardhan Poojary in a press meet on Thursday October 17, Shetty said that the case should be handed over to the CBI soon. “The students’ association has staged various protests and demanded that the government give Rs 2 lac to the family but till date, our demand has not been met. The police officials and CoD were unsuccessful in tackling the case which is taking new turns as the days pass. Hence, it is necessary to hand over the case to the CBI as demanded by various political party leaders, various associations, and even the common public,” he said.
Condemning the allegations made against Dr Veerendra Heggade’s family, Shetty said that the case has now become a national level issue and the government should prioritize the case by handing it over to the CBI. “The investigation should be done soon, before evidences get destroyed,” he said.
Preethi Prabhakar, student of Canara Degree College, said, “We girls want freedom and these kinds of incidents have created fear in us. The case should soon be handed over to the CBI and justice must be done.”
Another student Varsha Prabhu said, “Sowjanya is like our sister. We want justice in the case. Culprits should be caught soon and given stringent punishment.”
